ZUMC China Trip – Week Four

The week started slowly and on Monday and Tuesday we were worked hard in our classes and set projects/essays to be completed over ‘National Week’.

National Week in China is a week long public holiday commemorating the day the ruling Chinese Communist Party was incepted in Shanghai on October 1st 1949.

Towards the end of the week, the campus was eerily quiet with many students returning home or travelling around the country – just generally making the most of the generous time off.

In preparation for national week we attended a gala and ‘opening ceremony’ at the new Zhejiang University of Media and Communication (ZUMC) campus opening in the next district from Xiasha, where we are staying, called Tong Xiang. The new campus is a joint initiative between Coventry University, ZUMC and the Tong Xiang local government.

Coventry exchange students experience Chinese tea culture

When a group of students from Coventry University were told that their Saturday would be spent visiting a tea museum, reservations were present in most minds.

Following a trip to the incredibly beautiful West Lake, the students were to pack onto the sweltering coach and move on to the Hangzhou National Tea Museum. As such a prominently consumed beverage for the English, the thought of hearing about such a thing seemed dull to say the least. But to their surprise, the day offered much more than first expected. China: in 500 words

What will I take from China? Difficult one.

I’ll never forget the smog. The air here is thick, and hot. Even at 9am, its hot here. Maybe we’ve been lucky with the weather though.

The roads? The drivers here are mental. They don’t drive so much as take aim. Weaving in and out, blasting horns and speeding about the place, they are on a mission, in the race of life. And the constant horns, they’ll stay with me for a while yet.
