Q&A: How Does China’s Media Compare With The Western World?

Is State Media Control Being Relaxed?

CHINA’S MEDIA certainly does lack openness to outsiders to some degree. For example, certain ‘western’ based websites such as Facebook and Youtube are not available to Chinese citizens. But one can never compare a media system with a history of roughly 50 years to a mature system in the UK, for instance, where society has developed rapidly over the last one hundred years. Certainly things are getting better all the time, and we are encouraged that access is becoming more open, albeit slowly. Certainly the situation now is very different to the view held by a lot of people living in the western world, which is one of an oppressive media regime.
