Paul Abbott: ‘TV’s Shakespeare’

THE CREATOR of the critically acclaimed Channel4 series Shameless and BAFTA winner Paul Abbott will be coming to Coventry to speak about his career in a special Coventry Conversations on Tuesday.

Born into a working class Burnley in 1960, Paul was the ninth of ten children who would eventually have to fend for themselves after their mother and father abandoned the family. It’s these childhood experiences that would inspire Shameless thirty years later.  

From 2003 to 2004 Abbott became one of the most in demand writers in British television following the acclaimed political thriller State of Play and crime drama Alibi topped of with Shameless in 2004.

Abbott enrolled at the University of Manchester in 1980 studying Psychology but after having a radio play accepted by the BBC in 1982 he decided to leave university to be a full time writer.

Abbott has been the writer behind episodes of some of Britain’s most popular series including; Coronation Street, Cracker and Touching Evil.
