STEVE CROPLEY editor-in-chief of Haymarket’s Autocar magazine, has been given top honours by his peers, in new awards for motoring journalism.
The first Headline Auto Awards asked the automotive press and industry was to choose their favourite journalists in a nomination process that gave the most weight to votes from rival publishing houses.
A judging panel drawn from the motoring media’s leading lights gave Cropley a perfect score to win Features Writer of the Year. They then made him Journalist of the Year from a field of high-powered contenders including Ken Gibson, motoring editor for the Sun newspaper, and Tom Ford, the host of Channel Five’s Fifth Gear show. Cropley, who joined Haymarket in 1991, has helped many others to success in his profession, particularly through his efforts to create the postgraduate degree in auto journalism at Coventry University and his teaching in the course as a visiting professor.
One judge called Cropley “one of the top five most important journalists in the world” and another described him as “The ultimate journalist in every way – professional, personable, sharp as a razor and a beautiful scribe”.
